U.S. and Gulf States Reject Iran’s Fee Demand, Insist on Strait Reopening First

The United States and its Gulf allies have pushed back on Iran’s request for a fee, conditioning any sanctions relief on Tehran first reopening a key waterway and ensuring safe passage.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. and Gulf states have turned down Iran’s demand for a fee, linking any potential concessions to tangible steps by Tehran.

According to the report, the bloc insists that Iran must first reopen the Strait and provide firm guarantees on shipping safety and broader regional security. Only then would discussions on sanctions relief or other measures be considered.

The standoff highlights ongoing tensions over critical maritime chokepoints, where Iran has previously threatened to disrupt traffic. The strait in question is a vital route for global oil shipments.
