US Crypto Fraud Losses Estimated at $80.7 Billion in 2025

The Consumer Federation of America estimates total US cryptocurrency fraud losses reached $80.7 billion in 2025, far above the $11.37 billion officially recorded by the FBI.

A new estimate from the Consumer Federation of America puts total US losses from cryptocurrency fraud in 2025 at $80.7 billion. The FBI had registered $11.37 billion in losses, but researchers scaled the figure 7.1 times higher to account for severe underreporting – law enforcement hears about only 14% of cases.

Investment fraud was the dominant category, with an estimated $61.4 billion in losses. Older Americans over 60 reported $4.4 billion in crypto losses.

The gap between official reports and total estimated losses highlights the hidden scale of the problem as scammers increasingly rely on digital assets.
