Turkish FM says regional alliance draws a line through the Mediterranean

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan contrasted a regional alignment stretching from Turkey in the north to Egypt in the south with what he described as Turkey's own defensive cooperation framework.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said a regional alignment anchored by Turkey to the north and Egypt to the south is "drawing a line right through the middle" of the Mediterranean for a clear purpose.

By contrast, Fidan said Turkey's own alliance is not directed against any country. He described it as a framework for cooperation and a means of establishing deterrence.

The remarks underline Ankara's effort to frame its regional posture as defensive while pointing to a competing alignment across the eastern Mediterranean.
