Trump Leans Toward Economic Pressure, Not Military Offensive, Against Iran

President Trump signals a preference for economic measures over a new military offensive against Iran, as tensions over Strait of Hormuz shipping persist.

President Trump said he is "low keying it" with Iran and prefers to let economic pressure build rather than order a new military offensive, according to Axios. The comments came after Iran issued a new list of demands on Saturday for allowing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

"We are only semi-negotiating with them," Trump said. US officials added that the president is looking to "de-escalate for now."

The remarks land ahead of the US stock market futures open in under five hours, shifting the near-term geopolitical risk backdrop toward less military confrontation.
