Thai Baht: Benign Inflation Keeps BoT on Hold

Thailand's CPI eased to 2.0% y/y in July, below consensus, suggesting the Bank of Thailand will keep rates steady.

Thailand's headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.0% year-on-year in July, coming in below market expectations, according to a note from Commerzbank strategists. The softer print was attributed mainly to a decline in retail fuel prices.

While the core CPI measure has been trending gradually higher, overall price pressures remain manageable and are running below government targets. This gives the Bank of Thailand (BoT) little urgency to adjust its monetary policy stance.

Commerzbank expects the central bank to leave rates unchanged in the near term, given the benign inflation backdrop and still-solid growth indicators.
