Taiwan Plans Drone Swarm Strategy to Deter Chinese Invasion

Taiwan is aggressively scaling up its unmanned systems as part of a defense concept dubbed a "drone hellscape" to heavily raise the cost of any Chinese military action. The strategy envisions large swarms of relatively low-cost aerial and maritime drones deployed across the Taiwan Strait to detect, track, and strike invading forces.

The island’s plans call for an industrial ramp-up to manufacture 100,000 drones per month by the end of this decade. The approach draws partly on lessons from Ukraine, where drones have been used extensively to offset a larger conventional military.

By betting on massed, affordable systems rather than expensive platforms, Taiwan aims to deter aggression and complicate any cross-strait operation.
