Schwab Reports Monthly Activity Highlights
Charles Schwab posted record May net new assets of $49.9 billion, up 43% year over year, and record daily average trades of 11.8 million in May 2026.
The Charles Schwab Corporation released its monthly activity report for May 2026, showcasing strong growth in core net new assets, trading volumes, and total client assets.
Core net new assets reached $49.9 billion in May, a record for that month and a 43% increase compared to May 2025. Total client assets stood at $13.14 trillion as of month-end, up 27% year over year and 4% from the prior month.
New brokerage accounts opened during May totaled 461,000, a 37% rise versus the same month last year. Daily average trades hit a record 11.8 million, bolstered by heightened activity in equities and exchange-traded funds.
Client margin loan balances increased 38% from year-end to $154.6 billion, including $37.4 billion tied to long/short strategies. Transactional sweep cash ended the month at $472.4 billion, up 1% month over month and 19% from the prior year.
The major indices also advanced during the period. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed May at 51,032, up 3% for the month and 21% from May 2025. The S&P 500 finished at 7,580, a 5% monthly gain and 28% year over year, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 8% in May to 26,973, up 41% annually.
Schwab's trading activity index (STAX) climbed to 55.1 in May, compared to 50.1 in April and 39.7 a year earlier, reflecting elevated retail participation.
As of May 31, the company reported 39.5 million active brokerage accounts, 5.9 million workplace plan participant accounts, and 2.3 million banking accounts.
