Saudi-Linked Tanker Fleet Moves Toward Gulf as Chokepoint Risks Mount

Over 15 mostly empty Saudi-linked VLCCs are steaming northwest toward Oman and the Persian Gulf, positioning for loading, a Hormuz transit, or ship-to-ship transfers outside the strait.

More than 15 tankers linked to Saudi Arabia, predominantly empty very large crude carriers (VLCCs), are moving northwest toward Oman, the UAE, and the Persian Gulf. The vessels appear to be positioning for loading operations in the Gulf, a potential transit through the Strait of Hormuz, or ship-to-ship transfers outside the strait.

The movement underscores the pressure on Saudi shipping from two critical maritime chokepoints. To the south, the Bab-el-Mandeb strait remains dangerous due to ongoing Houthi threats, making Red Sea transits risky. To the east, the Strait of Hormuz itself poses a perennial geopolitical risk, with tensions simmering in the region.

By repositioning toward the Gulf, the tankers may be seeking to avoid Red Sea exposure while maintaining operational flexibility. The pattern suggests that Saudi-related crude logistics are adapting to regional security concerns without overtly signaling a single route.
