Myanmar Junta Rejects ASEAN's Call to Free Suu Kyi

Myanmar's military-backed administration has rejected the latest appeal from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to immediately release deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi without conditions. The junta stated that such demands constitute interference in the country's sovereign legal system.

The junta's response underscores persistent tensions between Myanmar and the regional bloc, which has sought to mediate since the 2021 coup. ASEAN's five-point consensus, which called for an end to violence and inclusive dialogue, remains largely unimplemented.

Suu Kyi, 78, is serving a 27-year prison sentence on various charges widely seen as politically motivated. The military's refusal risks further international isolation and complicates diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis.
