Miners Advised Against Buying GPUs for AI Infrastructure
Alpine Fox founder Mike Alfred warned bitcoin miners about the risks of owning GPUs for AI, advocating colocation as a safer, more financeable option.
Speaking at the Energy Investors Forum in Dallas, Alpine Fox founder Mike Alfred argued that the AI infrastructure boom is not a bubble and that demand will persist for 20–30 years. He framed a key decision for bitcoin miners: owning GPUs directly yields higher revenue and control, but comes with greater risk of chip obsolescence and underutilized capacity.
As an alternative, Alfred pointed to colocation — where clients bring their own hardware and the facility sells electricity and cooling. This model is more conservative and easier to finance.
A separate panel at the forum revealed that most mining sites are not prepared to convert into data centers. Construction costs for bitcoin mining run around $300,000 per MW, while AI-ready infrastructure exceeds $10 million per MW, excluding chips.
