Japan's June cash earnings rise 3.4% YoY, real wages up 1.6%
Japan's total cash earnings increased 3.4% year-on-year in June, matching expectations and accelerating from 3.2% in May, while inflation-adjusted real wages rose 1.6%.
Japan’s nominal wage growth maintained its pace in June, with total cash earnings per worker climbing 3.4% compared to the same month last year. The figure matched the consensus forecast and edged up from a revised 3.2% increase in May.
Overtime pay, a gauge of business activity, rose 2.8% year-on-year. Meanwhile, real wages adjusted for consumer prices advanced 1.6% — a continuation of positive territory that may support private consumption.
The data underscores the Bank of Japan’s view that wage gains are broadening, a key condition for further policy normalization.
