Japan's August trade balance showed a ¥1,105.6 billion deficit, wider than the ¥1,058.4 billion estimate and the prior ¥638.3 billion shortfall.

Japan's August trade balance recorded a deficit of ¥1,105.6 billion, wider than the ¥1,058.4 billion consensus estimate and the prior ¥638.3 billion shortfall.

Exports rose 19.3% year-on-year, slightly ahead of the 18.4% forecast, while imports increased 28.0%, versus the 26.3% expectation. Both series beat forecasts, but stronger import growth widened the trade gap.

The August deficit was roughly ¥467 billion larger than the prior month, indicating a larger external shortfall than markets had anticipated.
