Finance Minister Katayama said Thursday that the principles behind the July 31 US-Japan joint intervention remain in place, but Tokyo did not announce fresh action.
USD/JPY touched 159.00, its highest level since early September, and was trading just below that level. The pair is on track for a fifth consecutive session of gains.
The yen's slide continues despite verbal warnings from Japanese officials, leaving markets to watch whether rhetoric will eventually turn into actual intervention.
