Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has strongly protested Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Etorofu, one of the disputed Northern Territories.
According to the statement, Japan regards the islands as inherently part of Japanese territory both historically and under international law. Takaichi said the visit by the incumbent Russian president is incompatible with Japan's consistent position, hurts the feelings of the Japanese people, and is 'absolutely unacceptable'.
The remarks highlight renewed diplomatic friction between Tokyo and Moscow over the territorial dispute.
