Iran Seeks Gas to Fix Deficit and Boost Exports, Deepening Ties with Russia

Iran, holding the world's second-largest gas reserves, faces a peak-demand deficit of 200–300 mcm/day and aims to use Russian gas to supply its north and increase exports to Iraq, Turkey, and others, strengthening Moscow-Tehran interdependence.

Iran has the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves yet suffers a structural daily deficit of 200–300 million cubic meters during peak demand periods. To address this, Tehran is looking to secure gas supplies to serve its northern regions while also expanding its own export capacity.

The country aims to boost shipments to Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Pakistan, and Oman. A pipeline deal with Russia could help meet both domestic and export goals, deepening the energy interdependence between Moscow and Tehran.

The cooperation comes despite the two nations still jostling for position in some regional gas markets.
