Hyperliquid Tops 30-Day Perpetual Futures Volume With…

Hyperliquid processed about $239.2 billion in rolling 30-day perpetual futures volume, more than triple second-ranked Aster's $72.2 billion, as HIP-3 markets push into equities and commodities.
Hyperliquid processed roughly $239.2 billion in perpetual futures volume over the latest rolling 30-day period, according to DeFiLlama data cited on September 17, cementing its position as the largest onchain derivatives venue. The figure was more than three times the $72.2 billion recorded by second-ranked Aster.
Lighter followed with about $54.9 billion, edgeX with $42.3 billion and Variational with $39.6 billion over the same window. Across all perpetual DEX protocols tracked by DeFiLlama, 30-day volume totalled approximately $661.4 billion, giving Hyperliquid roughly a 36% share on its own. Its volume exceeded the combined totals of Aster, Lighter and edgeX. Hyperliquid's cumulative perpetual futures volume has now passed $5.3 trillion.
On shorter horizons, the platform recorded about $46.3 billion in seven-day perpetual volume and $8.3 billion over 24 hours, while open interest — the value of outstanding derivative positions — stood near $7.1 billion. DeFiLlama put fees at approximately $78.7 million and protocol revenue at $61.9 million over the latest 30 days. Hyperliquid runs a purpose-built Layer 1 blockchain that pairs an onchain central limit order book with high transaction throughput, an architecture intended to mimic centralised derivatives exchanges while settling trades through blockchain infrastructure.
HIP-3 pushes beyond crypto
A rising share of activity comes from HIP-3, Hyperliquid's permissionless framework that lets third-party developers launch their own perpetual markets. HIP-3 markets accounted for only about 2% of Hyperliquid's perpetual volume at the start of 2026 but had climbed to nearly half of activity by July. TradeXYZ has been among the largest contributors, listing perpetual contracts tied to the Nasdaq-100 and single stocks such as Nvidia and Tesla. The framework also supports markets referencing commodities, pre-IPO companies and other real-world assets. DeFiLlama Research estimated in August that Hyperliquid was clearing about $220 billion in perpetual volume per month as HIP-3 demand grew.
The expansion is drawing interest from traditional finance. Payward, the parent company of Kraken, said this week it intends to use Hyperliquid's HIP-3 infrastructure to offer perpetual futures to eligible U.S. clients through CFTC-regulated Bitnomial Exchange, subject to regulatory approval. The plan would pair Hyperliquid's public blockchain with regulated U.S. clearing and customer-account structures.
Hyperliquid's lead among onchain derivatives venues is now substantial, though its market mix is shifting toward tokenised and real-world exposures that trade continuously. How long the gap holds will depend on competition from Aster, Lighter and other platforms, and on whether HIP-3 keeps attracting volume outside traditional crypto perpetuals.
