HRL Labs' Cryogenic CMOS Controller Achieves Real-Time Quantum Error Correction
HRL Laboratories has unveiled a silicon quantum processor that uses an integrated cryogenic controller to correct errors in real time without external electronics, achieving a tenfold drop in control errors.
The new platform features an 18-qubit chip, a dedicated CMOS controller, and a superconducting ribbon cable. HRL reports that control errors were reduced by a factor of ten compared to earlier demonstrations for this type of qubit, while single-gate operations run in under a microsecond.
In a quantum repetition code experiment, the system showed approximately fivefold error suppression as the number of qubits increased. The lab describes this as the first demonstration where a cryogenic controller entirely handles error correction, eliminating the need for room-temperature electronics.
