Heat Waves Sap Europe’s Reliable Power, Forcing Fossil Fuel Reliance

A series of blistering heat waves has weakened some of Europe’s most historically reliable electricity sources, pushing the continent to depend more on imported fossil fuels and variable renewables.

Recent blistering heat waves across Europe have eroded output from some of the continent’s most historically reliable electricity generators. These baseload sources, typically counted on for steady supply, have been undermined by extreme temperatures.

As a result, Europe has been forced to lean more heavily on imported fossil fuels and weather-dependent renewable energy to fill the gap. The shift highlights growing challenges to energy security as climate events become more frequent.

The situation may intensify pressure on policymakers to accelerate grid resilience investments, while near-term reliance on imports could affect energy prices and trade balances.
