Gold and the S&P 500 are trading at record highs. Bitcoin, by contrast, has been getting cheaper for a third straight quarter.

Institutional adoption was supposed to turn the first cryptocurrency into a mature defensive asset, but investment funds and corporate crypto treasuries have instead become sources of selling pressure.

As a result, bitcoin in 2026 is struggling to fit either the safe-haven story or the broader risk-asset category.
