Fed’s Goolsbee: Inflation Is the Economy’s Biggest Problem

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee says inflation is still the primary challenge, while the labor market remains stable but unexceptional. He stressed that the economy’s health hinges on resilient consumer spending.

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee pointed to inflation as the most critical issue for the U.S. economy ahead of the July CPI report. In his view, price pressures remain the dominant risk.

He characterized the labor market as “stable without being good,” suggesting underlying slack persists despite headline strength. Goolsbee also flagged that consumer financial health will be essential for the economy to stay robust.
