FDA Authorizes Four New Nicotine Pouches, Citing Lower Harmful Chemicals
The FDA has authorized four new nicotine pouch products through the premarket tobacco application pathway, noting they contain lower levels of harmful chemicals than comparable oral tobacco products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted marketing orders to four new nicotine pouches under the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) pathway. In its evaluation, the agency found these products contain lower levels of most harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) compared to other oral and smokeless tobacco offerings.
The FDA also stated it is now applying efficiency improvements—developed during a pilot program—to its broader review of other PMTAs. The decision marks a step in the agency’s ongoing approach to authorize potentially less risky nicotine alternatives for adults.
