A former Los Angeles police officer has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in a home invasion robbery targeting a teenager’s cryptocurrency. Eric Heilem and accomplices broke into a 17-year-old’s apartment in December 2024, threatening to kill the victim before taking a hard drive with approximately $350,000 worth of Bitcoin.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mildred Escobedo denied a defense motion for a new trial, noting that Heilem’s actions were motivated by greed. Under the sentence, Heilem will be eligible for parole after seven years, according to prosecutors. Three additional defendants have yet to stand trial.
