Eurozone July Inflation Rebounds, Pressuring ECB as Oil Prices Surge

A rebound in Eurozone inflation in July, driven by the Iran conflict and a more than 20% monthly oil price surge, halted disinflation and may force the ECB to raise rates further.

EURUSD

Euro area inflation unexpectedly rebounded in July, bringing the disinflation trend to an abrupt halt. The flare-up in the Iran conflict and a monthly leap in crude oil prices of more than 20% were cited as the main causes.

The renewed price pressure complicates the European Central Bank’s policy outlook. Unless a peace deal in Iran defuses the energy spike, the ECB could be forced to raise interest rates further to contain inflation.

The data underscore the sensitivity of European price dynamics to geopolitical tensions and global commodity markets. An Iran peace agreement would likely ease oil costs and restore the path of disinflation.
