EU MiCA Implementation Triggers Rise in Crypto Impersonation Scams
Scammers are posing as EU regulators and crypto firms to defraud users after the MiCA framework took effect on July 1, according to regulators cited by the Financial Times.
Following the July 1 enforcement of the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules, authorities have observed a surge in fraudsters impersonating regulatory bodies and crypto service providers to deceive investors, reports the Financial Times.
France's Financial Markets Authority (AMF) has documented incidents where fraudsters posed as regulator or crypto company staff. They convinced clients of unlicensed platforms to transfer assets to supposedly compliant accounts or fake websites.
In parallel, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) warned of scams using its name and logo, including the distribution of forged regulatory documents.
