Elon Musk Says AI Could Surpass Human Intelligence Within Five Years, Foresees ‘Age of Abundance’ by 2036

In an interview with The Economist, Elon Musk predicted that AI could exceed the collective intelligence of humanity in about five years and that humans may lose control of the technology within the next decade. He envisioned an ‘age of abundance’ by 2036 but acknowledged the risk of catastrophe is not zero.

Elon Musk, founder of xAI, told The Economist that artificial intelligence is likely to surpass the combined intellectual capacity of all humans within roughly five years. He added that it is improbable humans will remain in control of the technology into the 2030s.

Musk suggested that by 2036 the most likely scenario is an ‘age of abundance’ where AI outperforms humans in every domain except perhaps being human. However, he stressed that the risk of a catastrophic outcome is not zero.

Rather than slowing development, Musk proposed that AI labs share limited access to models before release, enabling competitors to identify dangerous capabilities early. He also criticized OpenAI’s transition from a non-profit to a commercial structure.
