The National Cyber Security Centre of the Netherlands has identified a new attack vector targeting Mac devices through a vulnerability in Screen Sharing. According to the agency, the flaw allows hackers to take full control of an affected computer, after which they install a Monero mining payload.
US cybersecurity authorities have also weighed in: the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency assigned the threat a risk rating of 9.8 out of 10, highlighting the severity of the issue. The activity is described as cryptojacking, where compromised devices are used to mine Monero without the owner's consent.
