Dollar Mixed Ahead of CPI, Carry Trades in Focus: OCBC

The US dollar held in a mixed range as traders await a critical CPI release, with geopolitical tensions and hawkish Fed comments offsetting each other, according to OCBC analysts.

The dollar traded mixed on Tuesday, trapped in a narrow range as markets nervously awaited the US consumer price index report. OCBC strategists Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong noted that the greenback is being pulled in two directions: on one side, escalating Middle East tensions are boosting safe-haven demand, while on the other, hawkish rhetoric from Federal Reserve officials is reinforcing higher-for-longer rate expectations.

This push-and-pull has left directional bets muted, shifting attention to carry trades where investors profit from interest rate differentials. With the CPI data poised to either validate or challenge the Fed’s rate path, a breakout from current ranges could depend on whether inflation surprises to the upside or downside.

The analysts suggest that near-term dollar direction remains data-dependent, and the CPI print will be decisive for the next leg. A hot reading could push the dollar higher, while a cooler number may revive expectations for earlier rate cuts.
