Daily Marijuana Use Surpasses Alcohol and Cigarettes in the US
A federal survey shows 21.4 million Americans aged 12+ used marijuana daily or near-daily in 2025, exceeding the number of daily drinkers and cigarette smokers for the first time.
Daily and near-daily cannabis consumption has overtaken both frequent alcohol drinking and regular cigarette smoking in the United States, according to the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). An estimated 21.4 million people aged 12 and older reported using marijuana on a daily or almost-daily basis.
By comparison, 17.2 million respondents said they drank alcohol that frequently, while 19.9 million smoked cigarettes regularly. The milestone marks a significant shift in American substance-use patterns.
The survey, conducted annually by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, reflects a decades-long trend of rising cannabis normalization and declining cigarette use. The data may provide a macroeconomic backdrop for the evolving legal cannabis industry.
