Cointelegraph Sting Exposes North Korean IT Workers via Fake Crypto Startup

An undercover Cointelegraph reporter posed as a venture capitalist to engage with North Korean IT operatives inside a bogus crypto startup created by researchers, exposing the threat of infiltrators in the industry.

In a joint operation in June, cybersecurity researchers Heiner García, Mauro Eldritch, and the ANYRUN app set up a fictitious crypto startup to trap suspected North Korean IT workers. Cointelegraph was invited to assist: a reporter went undercover, posing as a venture capitalist interested in the project.

During interactions, the reporter discussed potential funding and even offered the workers an opportunity for Cointelegraph coverage. Unbeknownst to them, they were pitching to the very publication they sought to exploit.

The investigation sheds light on the ongoing threat of North Korean operatives infiltrating the crypto sector, often to generate revenue for the regime or steal code and funds.
