Coincheck Launches 2x Crypto CFDs Six Years After Ending Margin Trading
Coincheck has re-entered leveraged crypto trading with cash-settled CFDs on Bitcoin, Ether and XRP, capped at 2x leverage under a regulated derivatives account.
Coincheck has re-entered leveraged cryptocurrency trading, rolling out a cash-settled contracts-for-difference product capped at 2x leverage for eligible Japanese retail customers. The service, branded Coincheck Leverage, began its phased launch on 24 September and covers BTC/JPY, ETH/JPY and XRP/JPY pairs, with both long and short positions permitted.
It marks a return to crypto derivatives for the Tokyo-based exchange more than six years after it wound down its previous margin offering, and it is structured differently. Where the old product was a lending-based model, the new one runs through a regulated derivatives account.
Margin and mechanics
Retail clients must post margin equal to half of their position, which effectively limits leverage to twice the funds deposited. Market, limit and stop orders are supported, and trading is available around the clock outside maintenance windows. Gains and losses are settled in cash, so the underlying cryptoassets are neither transferred nor lent out.
Coincheck flagged the plans in Coincheck Group's annual report. The service operates under the company's Type I Financial Instruments Business registration, number 3540, held with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau — a licence Japanese regulators require for over-the-counter crypto derivatives activity.
The CFDs are built into Coincheck's existing application, letting users move between spot and leveraged trading without installing a second app and transfer Japanese yen between the two. The accounts themselves remain distinct: customers need an existing spot account and must open a separate Coincheck Leverage account, which involves a suitability assessment.
Access is initially limited to version 5.0.0 or later of the iOS app, with the rollout expanding gradually among eligible users. Coincheck said Android and web versions are planned before the end of 2026, while corporate accounts are scheduled to gain access from 2027.
The earlier margin service, which let customers borrow yen or cryptoassets on the platform and matched participants seeking to lend and borrow yen or Bitcoin, stopped accepting new borrowing in May 2017 and closed fully on 13 March 2020. Customers at the time were instructed to repay outstanding positions. Coincheck did not give a reason for the shutdown, saying only that it was considering an alternative product. The new CFD line supplies leveraged price exposure without reviving that lending structure.
