Coinbase, Moov to bring stablecoin payment infrastructure to community banks and credit unions

Coinbase and payments provider Moov are partnering to add stablecoin acceptance, settlement and real-time funding to the platforms used by more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions.
Coinbase and payments infrastructure provider Moov have struck a partnership aimed at giving more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions access to stablecoin payment acceptance, settlement and real-time funding. The arrangement is notable because it places stablecoin capabilities inside the banking systems smaller institutions already run, rather than requiring them to build separate crypto operations.
Under the integration, Coinbase's Payments API and custodial wallets will be embedded into Moov's existing payments platform. That combination allows participating institutions to offer consumer payments, merchant acceptance, settlement and payouts on stablecoin rails without developing their own crypto infrastructure.
Aimed at competing with larger players
Ryan VanGrack, Coinbase's head of corporate affairs, framed the move as a way to reach local lenders. He said community banks and credit unions have watched their customers use digital assets for years, and argued that modern technology should meet local institutions where they are — giving them tools to compete with the largest players while preserving their standing as trusted community pillars.
Jill Castilla, chief executive of Citizens Bank of Edmond, described a 125-year history of serving Main Street businesses and said community banks innovate by solving problems they hear in their lobbies. She pointed to the bank's patented ATM technology, festivals, business incubators and systems built to support small businesses during national crises, adding that its small business customers are now looking to lower interchange costs and get paid faster.
The deal extends a broader shift in Coinbase's banking strategy, which has moved from serving banks mainly as a crypto trading venue and custodian toward supplying infrastructure that can be embedded directly into traditional financial services. Analysts said early last year that Base and stablecoins positioned Coinbase to become mission-critical crypto infrastructure.
That push has already produced high-profile tie-ups. In July 2025, PNC partnered with Coinbase to bring crypto services to its banking customers, with agreements involving Citi and JPMorgan following. The strategy feeds into Coinbase's wider ambition to be seen as the "everything exchange."
