BitGo Moves $7.4B WBTC to Chainlink Cross-Chain Standard

BitGo has chosen Chainlink as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure for its $7.4 billion wrapped bitcoin (WBTC), moving away from LayerZero. The move ensures a single canonical version of WBTC on each network without derivative copies.

WBTCLINK

BitGo plans to transition $7.4 billion in wrapped bitcoin (WBTC) to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), designating Chainlink as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure provider for the token. The move replaces LayerZero, which previously handled WBTC bridging.

By adopting Chainlink's standard, BitGo will mint a single canonical version of WBTC on each supported blockchain, preventing the creation of derivative copies that used to emerge from bridging operations. Token smart contracts and transfer limits remain under BitGo's custody.

The transition is a significant step toward simplifying wrapped bitcoin's representation across chains, potentially reducing risk and improving trust. The market value of WBTC being moved totals $7.4 billion.
