Australian eSafety Regulator Sues Telegram Over Failure to Remove Terrorist Content
Australia's eSafety Commissioner has filed a civil penalty suit against Telegram, alleging the platform failed to detect and remove terrorist-propagating materials under the country's online safety laws.
The Australian eSafety regulator has lodged a civil suit against Telegram in the Federal Court, claiming the messaging service breached the nation's electronic service standards. The action stems from Telegram's alleged failure to identify and take down materials that promote terrorism.
eSafety identified six violations of the standards established under Australia's Online Safety Act 2021. The law empowers the commissioner to hold digital platforms accountable for harmful content.
If the court rules in favor of the regulator, Telegram faces a maximum total fine of A$54.6 million (approximately $38 million) for the six alleged contraventions.
