Interactive Brokers Opens Autonomous Trading to Connected…

Interactive Brokers launched Autonomous Trading, letting eligible clients connect third-party AI systems that can submit supported stock and equity-option orders under user-defined triggers.

Interactive Brokers has rolled out Autonomous Trading, a feature that lets eligible clients connect third-party AI systems capable of submitting supported stock and equity-option orders once user-defined conditions are met. The brokerage says the capability covers more than 75,000 stocks and marks a move beyond its earlier AI integrations, which could generate trade instructions but required a person to review and submit them.

Clients can give instructions in natural language, such as monitoring implied volatility, evaluating a position after a decline from a recent high, trimming an oversized holding or placing a covered call when a volatility trigger is reached. Interactive Brokers stresses that these are user-defined triggers, not broker recommendations. CEO Milan Galik said the feature builds on the firm's use of automation by letting clients define strategies and safeguards while connected AI monitors markets and executes within those parameters.

Capital boundary

The AI Partition is funded by transferring money from an existing Interactive Brokers account, without opening a new account or making an external deposit. It is designed to ring-fence capital available to the automated process. Launch limits apply and can vary by account size, eligibility, affiliate, client country and regulatory requirements; the amount allocated can be capped, including for larger accounts. A partition limits the scope of exposure but does not remove market risk, and losses can occur within the allocated amount.

The launch also raises operational questions. Natural-language rules may need precise definitions for price references, time windows, position sizes and incomplete data, especially for options. A covered-call instruction depends on the underlying position, contract selection, expiry, strike, volatility measure and order price. The client remains responsible for setting criteria and understanding portfolio effects. The release gives limited detail on audit logs, error correction or disputed-trade procedures, details that matter when orders can be submitted without per-order human review.

Autonomous Trading sits within a broader AI push. Interactive Brokers supports connections to platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity through the Model Context Protocol, while AI Screeners let users describe securities in natural language and Investment Themes and Connections link securities to industries, funds and derivatives. The shift from assistance to autonomous submission changes where human action is required. For clients, the appeal is continuous monitoring and rule-based execution across time zones; the trade-off is the need for boundaries robust enough to govern the system when conditions change.
