Interactive Brokers Launches Autonomous AI Trading With…

Interactive Brokers has launched autonomous AI trading for eligible clients, allowing connected AI platforms to place orders without per-trade approval under a $25,000 aggregate cap.

Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR) on Oct. 21 introduced autonomous AI trading, allowing eligible customers to let third-party artificial intelligence platforms identify opportunities and submit orders without approving each trade. The service moves the broker’s AI integrations beyond research and order preparation into automated execution.

IBKR Autonomous Trading can monitor more than 75,000 listed stocks, options and ETFs globally. Customers give instructions in natural language, and connected AI systems assess market conditions and execute supported trades within preset restrictions. The setup uses dedicated AI Partitions funded from existing brokerage accounts. Execution initially covers eligible stocks and equity options, with market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders using day validity. Margin trading, short selling, fractional shares, penny stocks and certain other instruments are excluded. Although the platform can research the broader universe, execution permissions are narrower.

Safeguards and limits

Customers can generally allocate up to 10% of account equity to AI Partitions, subject to a $1,000 minimum and a $25,000 aggregate maximum. Funds move internally rather than into a separate brokerage account. Only eligible individual non-margin accounts qualify; joint, retirement, advisor-managed and organizational accounts are excluded. Before activation, customers must complete at least 10 AI-generated trades of $100 or more each over two weeks through the existing manual approval process. Interactive Brokers plans an alternative eligibility assessment.

Customers can disconnect AI access in Client Portal, but revoking authorization does not automatically cancel pending or partially filled orders. The broker warns third-party AI systems may submit erroneous or unintended orders and says customers remain responsible for trading activity. Additional limits on order frequency, transaction size and account values are planned.

CEO Milan Galik said the aim is to let investors set strategies and safeguards while AI monitors markets and executes within those parameters. The launch follows June expansion of AI connections to ChatGPT and Grok, and the new service can use platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity through the Model Context Protocol.

Interactive Brokers reported third-quarter GAAP net revenue of $1.91 billion, commission revenue of $602 million and net interest income of about $1.15 billion. Customer accounts rose 35% year over year to 5.58 million, while daily average revenue trades increased 18% to 4.27 million. September client equity reached $964.7 billion. The broker has not disclosed adoption targets, expected trading volumes or revenue projections specifically tied to autonomous trading.
