ADX (Average Directional Index)

A 0–100 measure of trend strength, independent of trend direction.

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures trend strength on a 0–100 scale, regardless of direction. It is derived from the +DI and −DI directional lines, which show whether buyers or sellers dominate.

How traders use it

  • ADX above roughly 25 signals a trending market; below 20, a range.
  • The +DI and −DI cross indicates which side controls direction.
  • A rising ADX confirms a strengthening trend, not its direction.
