Upcoming Changes to Crypto Transfers: What the Travel Rule Means for You

BTC Markets outlines Australia's upcoming Travel Rule requirements for crypto transfers, effective 1 July 2026, including beneficiary details and possible delays on exchange-to-exchange transfers.

Australian crypto exchange BTC Markets has detailed how the country's Travel Rule will change cryptocurrency transfers when it takes effect on 1 July 2026.

The regulation, part of Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework administered by AUSTRAC, requires custodial digital asset platforms to collect and pass on sender and recipient information when crypto moves between platforms. BTC Markets says the goal is to curb scams and financial crime, bringing crypto transfers closer to the information standards that already accompany traditional bank transfers.

What changes for withdrawals

From 1 July 2026, BTC Markets will need additional beneficiary details for every crypto withdrawal. Customers will have to state whether the recipient is an individual or non-individual and provide the recipient's full legal name.

Withdrawals to self-hosted wallets will continue after those beneficiary details are provided. Withdrawals sent to another exchange or custodial platform, however, will require that platform to verify the Travel Rule details. If the required information cannot be confirmed, the withdrawal may be delayed or rejected. BTC Markets also warns that transfers between exchanges may take longer because of the coordination required.

The exchange is building an address book feature that lets users save wallet addresses together with their Travel Rule details, so later withdrawals to saved wallets will not require re-entering the information. That feature may not be ready before the compliance date.

What changes for deposits

When another exchange sends crypto to a BTC Markets customer, the sending platform may include the necessary Travel Rule information automatically, allowing the deposit to process normally. Deposits lacking the information — including transfers from personal wallets — may prompt BTC Markets to contact the customer for details before crediting the account.

Under the new rules, deposits cannot be credited until the required information has been received. If the information cannot be provided, the transfer may be returned to the sending platform under BTC Markets' policies. Once the details are confirmed, future deposits from the same address should not need another check.

BTC Markets says no customer action is needed immediately, but users may see Travel Rule-related questions before the July 2026 deadline. The exchange says it will continue to provide updates as implementation approaches.
