Trading 212 Taps Former Revolut Reg Expert to Lead Portugal Operations

Trading 212 has brought in a former Revolut regulatory specialist to head its Portugal operations, one of several broker developments that also saw CMC Markets add ChatGPT and iFOREX post a first-half loss.

Trading 212 has recruited a former regulatory specialist from Revolut to lead its operations in Portugal, adding compliance expertise from a digital banking challenger to the brokerage's European footprint. The appointee's name and the terms of the move were not disclosed in the initial report.

The hire came during a dense stretch of news for retail brokers. LCG has been through a management takeover, CMC Markets has integrated ChatGPT capabilities into its operations, and iFOREX reported a loss for the first half of the year — a mixed set of signals for firms competing in the FX and CFD market.

Regulatory backdrop

Australia's securities regulator, ASIC, has introduced new rules governing trading algorithms, a change that will shape how brokers deploy and supervise automated execution tools. Supervision of the technology underpinning retail order flow has become an increasingly prominent theme for regulators in multiple jurisdictions.

Elsewhere in the sector, BlackBull has pushed its planned initial public offering back to 2027, while Equiti has opened a second physical storefront in the United Arab Emirates — evidence that some firms continue to invest in face-to-face client acquisition alongside digital channels.

eToro is preparing to shift its clients onto a new app built around artificial intelligence, according to the same roundup of industry developments. Separate analysis cited in the recap suggests financial contracts could account for close to half of prediction-market volume by 2035.

For Trading 212, the Portuguese appointment places a compliance-focused executive at the head of a local operation, at a time when brokerages across Europe are contending with tighter oversight of marketing, onboarding and automated trading tools.
