Robinhood Adds $25 Million in Bitcoin to Balance Sheet

Robinhood bought $25 million of Bitcoin for its own balance sheet, a modest holding the broker says is meant to align it with the crypto ecosystem rather than reshape its finances.

Robinhood has purchased $25 million of Bitcoin to hold on its corporate balance sheet, giving the brokerage direct exposure to the asset at the centre of its expanding crypto franchise. The company framed the move as a signal of commitment to digital assets as it pushes further into trading, tokenization and blockchain infrastructure.

Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood's senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international, said the purchase was about alignment rather than financial engineering. "We care deeply about bitcoin and the ecosystem around it," he said, describing the position as a way of matching the company's vision with the crypto community. Kerbrat also acknowledged that a $25 million holding is unlikely to alter Robinhood's financial trajectory in any material way.

Small next to dedicated treasury firms

The scale puts the move in a different category from companies that have made Bitcoin accumulation a core capital-allocation policy. Strategy said this week it bought another 334 BTC for about $28.7 million, lifting its total holdings to 848,000 BTC. Robinhood, by contrast, is better understood as carrying a strategic position tied to its crypto operations than as repositioning its treasury around Bitcoin. Its shares closed Tuesday at $112, giving it a market capitalisation of roughly $100 billion, while the latest quarterly revenue reached $1.31 billion and platform assets stood at $384 billion at the end of August.

The Bitcoin purchase lands alongside a wider product build-out. Last week Robinhood outlined plans to offer perpetual futures to eligible U.S. customers, including Bitcoin and Ether contracts with leverage of up to 10x and six additional crypto markets at up to 3x — territory historically dominated by offshore exchanges. Crypto activity has also rebounded from a mid-year lull: the company reported $17.5 billion in combined August crypto notional volume, up 61% from July, with Bitstamp contributing $10.1 billion.

Robinhood is also moving beyond brokerage services into infrastructure. Robinhood Chain, its Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 built on Arbitrum technology and focused on tokenized real-world assets and decentralized finance, launched its public mainnet on July 1 and supports Stock Tokens that trade around the clock for eligible users. With 28.6 million funded customers at the end of August, the company can distribute new crypto products through an existing retail base rather than building an audience from scratch.

For shareholders, the key question is whether the $25 million purchase is a one-off gesture or the start of a broader treasury policy. A much larger series of purchases would make HOOD more sensitive to crypto prices, but at this size the more telling signal remains the pace at which perpetual futures gain traction, whether Robinhood Chain generates meaningful revenue, and whether the recovery in crypto volumes carries into the fourth quarter.
