Polish prosecutors charge fifth suspect in Zondacrypto probe involving around $100 million in estimated losses

Polish prosecutors have brought charges against a fifth suspect in their investigation into the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto, according to a statement from Poland's National Prosecutor's Office. The suspect, identified only as Roman Ż., was detained on Sept. 5 and faces two counts.

Prosecutors allege he took part in an organized criminal group and misappropriated PLN 7.8 million, roughly $2.1 million, in funds belonging to users of the exchange. According to the prosecution, the group altered, deleted and added computer records without authorization in order to obtain financial benefits. Roman Ż. pleaded not guilty and provided explanations in the case, the prosecutor's office said.

Authorities have asked the Katowice Wschód District Court to hold the suspect in pre-trial detention, citing the maximum penalty the alleged offenses carry, the risk that he could obstruct the proceedings, and the possibility that he might flee. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Wider investigation

Roman Ż. is the fifth person publicly identified as charged in the case. Prosecutors previously charged Radosław P. in late August, followed by Anna P., Jaromira W. and Rafał Z., all of whom were charged after their arrests on Sept. 2.

The broader Zondacrypto investigation covers reported losses of at least PLN 350 million, or about $94 million, based on figures from prosecutors. Authorities said earlier this year that the total could change as additional reports from alleged victims are submitted. More than 3,600 crime reports have been filed in connection with the case, prosecutors said.
