Marex Expands Digital Assets Offering With Cash-Settled…

Marex has introduced an OTC rolling spot crypto product that gives hedge funds, asset managers and digital asset firms long or short exposure via a cash-settled derivative, avoiding direct custody of the underlying coins.

Marex has launched an over-the-counter rolling spot cryptocurrency product for institutional clients, giving hedge funds, asset managers and digital asset firms long or short exposure to crypto through a cash-settled derivative rather than direct ownership of the underlying assets. The broker said the structure lets clients take positions without managing wallets, private keys or custody arrangements, while relying on its existing institutional trading infrastructure.

The offering is a cash-settled, margined OTC product designed to pair the economics of crypto-native markets with execution standards professional investors already know. It sits alongside Marex's wider digital asset capabilities, which include liquidity, execution, clearing, structuring, financing and prime brokerage services. The company also recently introduced Neon Crypto, a digital assets application built into its existing Neon platform, which brings execution tools, streaming market depth, real-time margin oversight and portfolio management into a single institutional interface.

Samuel Leyne, Co-Head of Crypto Trading at Marex, said the institutional crypto market has reached a point where clients are seeking more familiar ways to access digital assets. He said the rolling spot product is intended to offer a more seamless route into the asset class, letting institutions gain long or short exposure through a cash-settled OTC derivative without the custody, settlement and operational demands that come with holding the underlying assets.

Institutional infrastructure push

The launch reflects broader competition among financial infrastructure providers chasing institutional crypto demand. Rather than replacing traditional markets, many of these offerings aim to connect digital assets to existing trading and risk-management systems. Cash-settled structures can remove barriers tied to direct ownership, including custody and operational controls, but they also bring derivative-specific considerations such as margin requirements, liquidity conditions and exposure to the counterparty managing the contract. For institutions, the main appeal is integration: products that link crypto exposure to established execution, financing and reporting processes can slot more easily into existing investment operations.

The growth of OTC crypto derivatives suggests institutions are looking beyond simple asset ownership toward broader trading infrastructure. The key factors to watch are liquidity, counterparty arrangements and how these products hold up during periods of market stress. The next phase of adoption is likely to depend not only on access, but also on execution quality, transparency, risk controls and operational reliability across different market conditions.
