KuCoin Australia MD James Pinch at DECON 2026: Exchanges Becoming Infrastructure Behind Everyday Commerce

James Pinch, Managing Director of KuCoin Australia, spoke at DECON 2026 about how crypto exchanges are transforming into infrastructure providers for everyday commerce, highlighting KuCard and AI integration.

KuCoin Australia Managing Director James Pinch spoke at the Digital Economy Conference (DECON) 2026 in Sydney, joining Mastercard Australia Vice President Ashima Chaudhary for a fireside chat titled "From Programmable Money to Everyday Commerce: Unlocking the Next Payment Era." The session, moderated by Banking Circle Head of Account Management Yasmine Amani, explored how fiat, cards, stablecoins and digital assets are converging through multi-rail infrastructure.

Pinch argued that crypto exchanges are evolving beyond simple trading platforms into infrastructure providers that connect liquidity, payments and stablecoins to real-world utility. He noted that KuCoin's approach in Australia mirrors a broader global strategy: building responsibly within evolving regulatory frameworks while aligning the company's global product suite with local licensing, compliance and operating standards.

A key focus was KuCard, which allows eligible Australian users to spend supported crypto assets through Mastercard's global network for everyday purchases. Pinch emphasized that crypto must move beyond being purely an investment vehicle. "Crypto does not succeed by remaining just an investment; it succeeds by morphing to also encompass other real world use cases like payment methods," he said, adding that the goal is an ecosystem where people use the technology without thinking about it.

The discussion also covered trust, compliance and security as prerequisites for mainstream adoption. Pinch highlighted KuCoin's investments in cybersecurity and infrastructure expertise, stating that protecting users and maintaining resilient systems must remain a top priority. He pointed to KuCoin's regulatory milestones, including AUSTRAC registration in Australia and a MiCA license in Europe.

Looking ahead, Pinch identified artificial intelligence as a key force shaping digital finance, particularly as commerce and payments become more automated. He noted that KuCoin is investing in crypto-native AI initiatives to support users, developers and intelligent agents accessing market intelligence and on-chain information. Pinch predicted that over the next three to five years, crypto payments will become less visible as a technology and more natural as a financial behavior, with products like KuCard leading the way.

KuCoin, founded in 2017, serves over 40 million users across more than 200 countries and regions. The platform holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 27701:2019 certifications.
