Free Pension and Free Funds Now Available with Freetrade

UK broker Freetrade has removed subscription requirements for its self-invested personal pension (SIPP), mutual funds and gilts, making them available to every customer at no extra cost.
UK-based investing platform Freetrade has eliminated the subscription barrier for several core products, now offering a free self-invested personal pension (SIPP), mutual funds and gilts to all customers, the company announced today.
Previously, these features were locked behind the Plus subscription tier. With the change, every Freetrade user can open a SIPP without account fees or commissions on trades, and can invest in funds and government bonds (gilts) without a monthly subscription. The move expands the free, commission-free model to over 6,500 stocks, ETFs, investment trusts, bonds, funds and gilts.
What the changes mean
Freetrade’s SIPP now carries no account fee and no commission on buys or sells. Users can transfer existing pensions into the platform and manage everything through the app or web interface. The company says it is the UK’s only free self-investing personal pension that offers access to stocks, ETFs, funds, bonds and more.
Mutual funds and gilts, previously reserved for paid subscribers, are now open to all. Freetrade notes that while it does not charge for investing in funds, individual fund providers may levy their own charges, including an ongoing charges figure (OCF) and transaction fees.
Subscription plans adjusted
Because pensions, funds and gilts are no longer tied to a paid plan, Freetrade’s subscription tiers will now focus on add-on perks such as lower FX fees and higher interest on cash, rather than access to essential investment types. The company generates revenue via FX fees on non-GBP trades, a portion of interest on uninvested cash, and optional paid plans.
Freetrade emphasises that core investing tools — including long-term retirement products — are now free, and that customers can upgrade solely if they want extra features. The announcement follows the broker’s mission to make investing accessible and transparent.
