Coinbase for Agents: Your AI Agent Can Now Trade and Pay with Coinbase

Coinbase unveiled Coinbase for Agents, connecting AI agents to user accounts for crypto trading and payments with built-in limits and compliance.

Coinbase has launched Coinbase for Agents, a new product that connects AI agents directly to users' Coinbase accounts, allowing them to trade crypto, make payments and execute financial workflows on the user's behalf. Announced on June 11, 2026, the product is available now via an MCP server and a command-line interface.

The goal, Coinbase said, is to move generative AI from answering financial questions to taking action. Users can instruct an agent to gradually rebalance a portfolio to a target allocation such as 60% BTC, 20% ETH and 20% SOL, placing limit orders when the market drops by predetermined percentages. Crypto spot and derivatives trading are fully enabled at launch, with plans to expand to stocks, index funds, prediction markets and commodities. Agents can also monitor cash balances to keep idle funds deployed and pay for premium data services; support for the x402 agentic payments protocol is coming soon.

Coinbase stressed that users remain in control. Agents can be confined to an isolated portfolio with no access to other holdings, and can only perform actions that were explicitly permissioned. Upcoming features will allow users to set exact rules around maximum trade size and spending. Payments made through the product go through Coinbase's standard transaction monitoring and Know-Your-Transaction compliance checks.

The launch extends Coinbase's existing AI efforts, following AgentKit in 2024 and the x402 payments protocol last year. The company also touted its in-app Coinbase Advisor, an AI tool offered by Coinbase Advisors, LLC, which is registered as an RIA with the SEC and a CTA with the NFA. For businesses, Coinbase Payments now supports agentic payments acceptance.

Developers have two initial options for connecting agents: an MCP interface for web-based harnesses like ChatGPT and Claude Web, which needs no API keys, and a CLI with a Coinbase Skill for terminal-centric environments such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenClaw. A remote MCP version with sign-in-with-Coinbase authentication is planned for the future.
