Circle Launches Native USDC on OKX’s Ethereum Layer-2…

Circle has deployed native USDC and its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol on OKX's X Layer, giving developers direct stablecoin access and cross-chain liquidity without wrapped tokens.

Circle has launched native USDC and its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) on X Layer, the Ethereum-compatible layer-2 network developed by OKX. The integration puts the stablecoin directly into an ecosystem tied to one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume.

X Layer's compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine lets developers move or adapt Ethereum-based applications with relatively few changes. Native USDC gives those applications a dollar-denominated asset for trading, lending, payments and other decentralized finance activity without relying on wrapped versions transferred from another blockchain. Circle said the approach can simplify liquidity management and reduce risks associated with third-party bridges.

CCTP enables USDC to move between X Layer and other supported chains through a burn-and-mint process: tokens are burned on the source network and equivalent amounts are minted on the destination. Unlike traditional lock-and-wrap bridges, this keeps USDC as a native asset on the receiving network, which can make accounting and liquidity simpler for multi-chain applications. Use cases include payments, DeFi lending and borrowing, trading and cross-chain transfers. Eligible businesses can also access fiat on- and off-ramps through Circle Mint, linking on-chain activity to institutional issuance and redemption infrastructure.

The OKX connection matters for distribution. OKX recorded more than $975 million in spot trading volume over the previous 24 hours, ranking as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange by that measure. That does not automatically convert exchange volume into on-chain USDC demand, but it gives X Layer a potential edge: users already active in the OKX ecosystem may have fewer steps between centralized trading products and blockchain-based applications if liquidity builds on the network.

Stablecoin competition increasingly depends on distribution. USDC remains the world's second-largest stablecoin by market capitalization, behind Tether's USDT. Adding native USDC and CCTP to X Layer gives Circle another route to embed its stablecoin inside an exchange-connected blockchain ecosystem while offering developers a direct dollar asset and a cross-chain liquidity path.

Native support alone does not guarantee adoption. The commercial test for Circle will be whether X Layer generates enough trading activity, DeFi usage and developer interest to make the integration meaningful. If it does, USDC will already be positioned as one of the network's core dollar-denominated assets at a time when stablecoin issuers are competing for both regulatory acceptance and everyday usage.
