Specialist pair books sized for dividends and tape
A surrogate-specialist book is taught as about three or four names for a discretionary trader. Pair legs can be share-neutral, dollar-neutral, or capital-balanced, and dividends are collected either in a quality-sensitive core hold or in an overnight swing around the ex-dividend.
- A surrogate-specialist book is taught as about three or four names for a discretionary trader, matching a floor habit of three to five primary stocks plus a smaller secondary list.
- Share-neutral, dollar-neutral, and capital-balanced pair sizes set notional on each leg and can net a larger long-side dividend against a smaller short-side obligation.
- Tape reading on the watched names combines subpenny prints, book depth, and premium or discount to fair value to judge near-term direction.
- Pairs collect dividends either as a quality-sensitive core hold or as an overnight swing around the ex-dividend with no long-term inventory plan.
A short primary list
A surrogate-specialist book is taught as about three or four names for a discretionary trader. That count matches a floor habit of three to five primary stocks plus a smaller secondary list.
Pairs trading holds a long name against a related short name so relative performance, not outright direction, is the main risk. The watched names are the inventory of that book.
How pair size sets the cash-flow balance
A share-neutral pair uses equal shares on both legs. A dollar-neutral pair matches dollar notional and may use 105 shares of the cheaper name versus 100 of the other.
A 100-by-200 share pair can capital-balance the legs. Unequal share counts can net a larger long-side dividend against a smaller short-side obligation.
Dividend yield is defined as annual dividends per share divided by current price. Payers may distribute quarterly, annually, or as special dividends.
A core hold and an overnight swing
Pairs collect dividends in two constructions. One is a quality-sensitive core hold. The other is an overnight swing-trading hold around the ex-dividend with no long-term inventory plan.
For quarterly payers the overnight swing is framed as about four holds a year. Issuer quality is treated as less critical in that construction than in a core pair.
Tape reading on the watched names
Tape reading is used on those watched names by combining subpenny prints, premium or discount to fair value, book depth, and related microstructure cues for near-term direction.
What the ex-dividend markdown does
On the ex-dividend the prior close is marked down by the dividend. A long-sample upward drift in stocks is noted as a slight offset to that markdown.
