MAS unexpectedly tightens policy for second meeting, lifts SGD NEER slope

The Monetary Authority of Singapore surprised markets by tightening monetary policy again, slightly increasing the slope of the Singapore Dollar nominal effective exchange rate.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) unexpectedly tightened its policy for a second consecutive meeting, opting to slightly steepen the slope of the Singapore Dollar Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (SGD NEER).

Commerzbank analyst Charlie Lay noted the move caught markets off guard. The central bank stressed that the adjustment was smaller than previous tightening steps, signaling a measured approach.

The Singapore Dollar strengthened on the news as traders priced in a more hawkish MAS stance. The pair’s near-term path now hinges on how much further the authority is willing to lean against imported inflation.
