Political Risk Weighs on Indonesian Rupiah After Bank Indonesia Governor Resigns

The Indonesian rupiah and Jakarta equities fell after Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo unexpectedly stepped down, sparking concerns over political interference and overshadowing the currency’s attractive valuation.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo abruptly resigned with two years remaining in his term, raising political uncertainty. The departure came as a surprise to markets.

Following the news, the Indonesian rupiah (IDR) and Jakarta equities underperformed. The currency’s decline reflected investor unease over the potential for political interference in central bank policy.

Brown Brothers Harriman’s Elias Haddad noted that the political risks are tempering the valuation case for the IDR. Markets now await further developments to gauge the stability of monetary policy.
