Charles Schwab Launches AI-Powered Capability That Helps Investors Understand Portfolio Performance and Market Activity

Charles Schwab launched its first generative AI tool for retail clients, blending portfolio summaries, market news and research commentary. Rollout to self-directed U.S. retail clients by end of May.

Charles Schwab has begun rolling out its first generative AI capability for retail investors, a portfolio insights feature designed to explain what is moving a client's holdings. The firm said the feature is available on the Account Summary page of Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile App, with access expanding to all self-directed U.S. retail clients by the end of May.

The insights tool combines Schwab account data, third-party market news and commentary from the Schwab Center for Financial Research in a single view. It generates summaries for up to five holdings with the largest day-over-day moves, recaps market and industry news tied to S&P 500 equities that could affect the portfolio, and includes context from Schwab experts on possible drivers of market activity.

Schwab emphasized that the AI-generated output is intended for information and education, not investment advice, and is covered by the firm's privacy, security and data standards. The company also warned that generative AI content can be inaccurate, hallucinated, stale or incomplete, and advised clients to consult their account statements for complete account information.

The launch is supported by Schwab research showing rising client interest in AI. In a survey of nearly 1,000 retail clients with at least $2,000 in retail assets, conducted January 20-27, 2026, more than 60% of respondents said they were interested in using AI, and nearly 70% said AI could support routine tasks or play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise.

"Our clients have made it clear that they want the efficiency of AI combined with guidance from our professionals," said Jonathan Craig, Head of Retail Investing at Charles Schwab. "As we roll out AI-powered tools, our focus is on being intentional about how technology and human expertise come together so we can continue to meet clients' needs and expectations."

Schwab said it may later expand the capability to cover concentration risk, asset allocation and technical indicators.
