Trump Says US Held Back from Targeting Iranian Officials to Preserve Nuclear Talks

President Trump reportedly monitored Ali Khamenei's funeral and stated that senior Iranian officials present could have been targeted, but the US refrained to keep nuclear negotiations alive. Trump also claimed Iran is eager to make a deal and that talks were paused for a week during the funeral period.

According to a report by Axios, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he monitored the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and claimed that senior Iranian officials gathered at the event could have been targeted. However, the U.S. chose not to strike because it wanted to preserve ongoing nuclear talks and maintain counterparts for negotiation.

Trump further stated that Iran was “begging to make a deal” and that both sides had agreed to pause discussions for a week during the funeral period before resuming. The comments highlight the delicate balance between military options and diplomatic efforts in U.S.-Iran relations.
